Aid organizations bash Madonna for taking child out of Africa

This story emphasizes the massive disregard for individuals aid organizations and social workers have. Madonna is set to adopt an African child -- we'll set aside the issue of the woman's fitness for parenthood -- and activists are angry because this won't solve all of Africa's problems.

The pertinent questions are (A) Is this best for the child? and (B) Is this best for Madonna? No other individuals are involved. The child may be disoriented, but he will move from the Third World to the First, and his father has given permission (the mother is dead). If it wasn't in Madonna's best interest, she wouldn't be doing it. I guess we'll also set aside the issue of what kind of father would give his son away; if anything it bolsters the case that the kid will be better off with Madonna.

But to activists, it's all about the "common good." International adoption isn't a panacea for a region with 43 million orphans, many due to AIDS, so the world should focus on "supporting the community" and -- God only knows why -- keeping children in the rotten areas they were born in. It's implied we shouldn't even allow international adoption.

Nauseating. "Not a solution"? It will be for this little boy, if only do-gooders would stay out of it.
