School shootings return - with older shooters?

Recently I proposed the idea that school shootings were returning, and I contemplated the reasons for it. There was a college shooting in Montreal, followed by a foiled Columbine plot in Green Bay, Wis., my hometown. Two incidents does not a trend make, but this news from Colorado starts to tip the scales: A gunman in a high school shot himself after fatally wounding a female hostage.

What really sets these cases (except the Green Bay one) apart from the rash of shootings five years ago -- and renders most of my explanations useless -- is that the killers are much older. The Montreal shooter was 25, and the most recent shooter is believed to be between 30 and 50 years old. Depending on how the details of this case turn out, it may end up that it's a totally new trend.
