"Noted," "most-quoted" political scientist Larry J. Sabato has finally told the whole truth: He never heard Virginia Sen. George Allen use the "N" word. In asserting he "knew" the epithet had passed through the official's lips, he was merely restating what he heard from people he knew and apparently trusted.
In other words, Sabato simply repeated the news, and the Associated Press ran with the story for two days without knowing what Sabato knew and how he knew it -- always being sure to point out that Sabato wasn't just any political science professor, but an oh-so-qualified one. And this is a serious allegation of racism against a public official we're talking about. I'm not sure if this lowers my opinion of Sabato or the AP more.
